On the first day of Medicare Open Enrollment, U.S. News & World Report released its 2027 ratings of the Best Insurance Companies for Medicare Advantage and Medicare Part D. If you’re comparing plans before the December 7 deadline, the list is a useful starting point, as long as you know what it measures and what it doesn’t.

Best Medicare Part D companies for 2027
For stand-alone prescription drug coverage, two companies earned the top rating: Centene and Humana Inc.
How the ratings were built
U.S. News scored each insurer’s 2027 Medicare coverage using CMS data. With input from industry experts, it chose 31 CMS quality measures and weighted each one by how much it matters to consumers. An insurer’s plans were averaged together, with more weight on the plans that have the most members.
How to use the list
- It rates companies, not plans. A top-rated company can still sell a plan in your county with a narrow network, a high drug deductible, or a formulary that leaves out your medication. Judge the plan, not just the brand.
- Availability is local. Medicare Advantage plans are sold county by county, and several insurers shrank their service areas for 2027. Confirm what is offered in your ZIP code.
- Your drugs and doctors decide. The right plan covers your prescriptions at a price you can afford and keeps your doctors in network. Run your own drug and doctor list against every plan you consider.
What to do before December 7
- Start with your current plan. Your Annual Notice of Change shows what changes in 2027: premium, deductible, drug costs and network. If your plan still fits, staying is a fine choice.
- Use the ratings to build a shortlist, then compare each plan’s star rating, formulary and provider network in the Medicare Plan Finder.
