Guaranteed Issue Life Insurance Over 70: How It Works and When It Makes Sense

Quick answer

Guaranteed issue life insurance accepts anyone in its age range, often about 40 or 50 to 80 or 85, with no medical exam or health questions. In exchange, coverage is small (often $5,000 to $25,000), premiums are higher, and most policies have a two- to three-year graded period: if you die of natural causes during it, your beneficiary gets your premiums back plus interest rather than the full amount.

If you’re over 70 and have been turned down for life insurance, or you’d rather not answer health questions, guaranteed issue coverage may be the only door left open. It’s useful, but it’s also the most expensive way to buy a small policy, so it pays to understand the fine print.

How the graded death benefit works

Most guaranteed issue policies have a waiting period of two or three years. If you die from an illness during that time, the insurer pays back the premiums you’ve paid, usually with interest (often around 10%). After the waiting period, the full death benefit is paid for any cause. Deaths from accidents are typically covered in full from the start.

That means guaranteed issue works best for people who expect to live at least a few more years and want to make sure the bill for their funeral is covered.

Who should consider it

  • You’ve been declined for simplified issue coverage.
  • You have a serious condition, such as recent cancer treatment, kidney failure or a recent stroke, that would disqualify you elsewhere.
  • You want a small, permanent policy with no paperwork about your health.

Who should look elsewhere first

If you can honestly answer “no” to most health questions, a simplified issue final expense policy usually costs less and pays the full amount from day one. Controlled diabetes or high blood pressure often doesn’t disqualify you.

What to check before you buy

  • Length of the graded period (two years is better than three).
  • What’s refunded if you die during it: premiums only, or premiums plus interest.
  • Maximum age at which you can buy, and whether coverage ever ends (it shouldn’t, for whole life).
  • Premium guarantee. Rates should be locked for life.
  • The insurer’s financial strength rating from AM Best or a similar agency.

Watch out for

  • “No one can be turned down” TV ads that don’t mention the waiting period. Ask about it directly.
  • Policies that cost more than they pay. If you pay $100 a month for $10,000 of coverage and live 10 more years, you’ll have paid $12,000. Do the math against putting money aside in a payable-on-death savings account.
  • Pressure to buy over the phone right away. A good agent will give you time and written terms.

Common questions

Can I get guaranteed issue life insurance at 85?

Some insurers accept applicants up to 85, a few beyond. Coverage amounts shrink and costs rise with age.

Is guaranteed issue the same as burial insurance?

Burial insurance is a marketing term for small final expense policies. Some are guaranteed issue and some are simplified issue.

Does AARP offer guaranteed issue life insurance?

AARP-branded coverage is sold through New York Life, including a guaranteed acceptance option for certain ages. Compare its rates and waiting period like any other policy.
